And he did it all carrying a 12-foot wood cross.
If you haven't guessed, Blessitt has a very shut relationship with Jesus, whose message he felt compelled to deliver via his personal distinctive way. Mentioned message is also often and forcefully delivered in Matthew Crouch's documentary in regards to the subject, "The Cross: The Arthur Blessitt Story," opening Friday in more than 200 theaters nationwide.
Now sixty eight, Blessitt began his quest in the late sixties, when he had been ministering to the down and out on Los Angeles' Sunset Strip. Receiving a calling that not even the prognosis of a mind aneurysm could deter, he spent the subsequent 4 a long time traveling the globe, encountering presidents, popes and figures like Yasser Arafat along the way in which.
Narrated by Crouch, the movie concentrates exclusively on its wandering subject, who is the only figure interviewed. The outcomes are in the end lower than informative. Although Blessitt is extremely participating and has loads of each heartwarming and scary stories to inform about his experiences - he was arrested in Mississippi and physically attacked in Spain, for instance - his relentless proselytizing will show wearying even to the already converted.
Although archival footage of his travels in various unique locales is dutifully included, we be taught valuable little about the background and mechanics of his enterprise. Nor can we hear from anybody else who might need a barely completely different view of the worthiness of his mission.
Ultimately, the film is sort of actually preaching to the choir, badly missing the chance to supply the form of depth or resonance that say, "Man on Wire" - one other story of 1 man's obsession - did so skillfully and poetically.
