Comedy Writing Tips

Comedy Writing Tips

If you write jokes, or have tried to put in writing jokes, you could have discovered that, while some jokes "write themselves" (the easy ones), others require some critical kick-beginning.
It's with the latter in thoughts that I've created this list of ten Jokestarter "start lines" that can enable you, particularly when trying to put in writing a joke based mostly on a news event (ie: "Weekend Replace" on SNL). These jokestarters come from my own experience as a author for "The Arsenio Hall Show" within the early 90s, after we scoured newspapers looking for bizarre news tales to base monologue jokes and bits on.
From experience, I can honestly say that sure, dying is simple, but comedy is tough. Writing good jokes takes time, a lot of effort and thought, and plenty of "understanding" your comedic muscle mass through utilizing starter strains like the ones listed under.
Think about this list as a starting point in itself - certainly not is it definitive or in any particular order; it is just meant that will help you come up with starter lines which will result in an honest joke.
Finally in fact, it is up to you to work your humorous muscle tissue, but these may show you how to begin you flex your funnybones:
1. In a related growth... (use this when you can come up with a parallel gag)
2. In a related story... (identical thought as #1, just slightly completely different)
three. To not be outdone... (use this when there is a rival or one other person that will match into the concept)
four. Authorities are looking out for... (greatest for crime-associated occasions, and finest to use when you can come up with a twist gag)
5. ____ first became conscious of the ____ once they... (good for stories where something ridiculous happened and the cops/peeps in charge acted stupid)
6. Gee, when a _____ does _____, doesn't that _____? (good for conversational moments whenever you want to go all Seinfeld on your audience)
7. And everybody wonders why... (one other Seinfeld-esque line that's extra conversational but normally leads into a powerful/edgy, opinionated assertion)
eight. This isn't the primary time _____ has finished ______... (good for when you'll be able to provide you with an analogous, fake occasion that mirrors/parallels the weird story's main character's stupid actions)
9. The last time _____ did one thing this good was when he/she _____ (just like #8, only with a bit extra 'tude)
