SAN FRANCISCO Fb Inc mentioned on Tuesday it has taken steps to clamp down on "hoaxes" and fake news tales that can spread like wildfire on its 1.35-billion member online social community.
The corporate said it had launched an option to permit Facebook users to flag a narrative as "purposefully pretend or deceitful news" to reduce the distribution of news tales reported as hoaxes.
Fb said it is not going to take away faux news tales from its website. Instead, the company's algorithm, which determines how extensively user posts are distributed, will keep in mind hoax experiences.
"A submit with a link to an article that many individuals have reported as a hoax or selected to delete will get diminished distribution within the News Feed," Fb explained.
Facebook has become an more and more important supply of reports, with 30 p.c of adults within the U.S. consuming news on the world's largest social community, in line with a 2013 study by the Pew Analysis Center in collaboration with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
Facebook cited tales about dinosaur sightings and analysis supposedly proving the existence of Santa Claus as examples of fake news tales.
Fb said "satirical" content, corresponding to information stories "supposed to be humorous, or content that is clearly labeled as satire," should not be affected.
